Review: The Breadwinner / SFF / Amelia

The Breadwinner, a gorgeous Oscar-nominated animation, follows a young girl named Parvana living in Afghanistan. When her father is unjustly jailed, Parvana cuts her hair and dresses as a boy as a last resort to provide for her family.

The animation in this film is especially charming, despite the confronting themes and images. The style of illustration adds an almost child-like innocence. The detail in the faces and the landscape is quite minimal but has a great impact.

I especially loved the important part storytelling played in the film, a story within a story acting as a sort of anchor throughout and paralleled Parvana’s own struggles.

The Breadwinner also features interesting characters with great performances. Parvana is a protagonist who is strong and compelling. I found myself becoming emotionally attached to her story and throughout the film I was truly rooting for her.

The story is beautifully told with rich characters, tear-jerking emotional moments and suspense that kept me engaged until the final moment. Along with frighteningly current and confronting themes that are told in an honest yet enthralling way, The Breadwinner is a true gem of a film.
