Erased / Japanese Film Festival / Mischa

Erased is a suspenseful crime mystery screening at this years Japanese Film Festival based on the award-winning manga Kei Sanbe’s Boku Dake ga Inai Machi.

We are introduced to Satoru Fujinuma on his way making a pizza delivery as he experiences a ‘revival’. A ‘revival’ is where Satoru jumps back in time within minutes to prevent a perilous situation. He will keep jumping back until it is resolved. It is never explained throughout the film when these ‘revivals’ started and why Satoru has this ability (which is a little frustrating).

Satoru lives a solitary life between delivering pizzas, struggling as a magna artist and attempting to avoid relationships. A kidnapping mystery and a death takes Satoru back to his youth (the furthest his ‘revivals’ have gone) when he is 10 years old and this is where the film spends most if its time and clues to the mystery are slowly revealed with constant ‘revivals’.

Erased  hooked me in and I’m on the search for Kei Sanbe’s Boku Dake ga Inai Machi.

Erased is touring nationally at the Japanese Film Festival.
